Seeing In The Dark

I know it's late notice, but there's a film on PBS tonight (7:00 pm in Milwaukee, Channel 10) about amateur astronomy titled "Seeing In The Dark". A subject I'm relatively interested in, I was also involved in the development of the website as part of my new position at Kapow. It was a fun project to work on, and it was a nice change to work on something that (1) I was interested in and (2) was more public-facing than my previous projects. I haven't seen it yet so I can't vouch for the show itself - but there's some interesting stuff on the site. For instance, did you know what former NFL running back ...

Thank you, thank you very much

In a followup to my last post, I'm proud to announce that my work on the CCI-SAP web site is being featured on the "Unmatched <Style>" site. For the moment, there's a screenshot on the home page - although as they add new sites, it will drop off. There's also a short opinion (which I did not write), and of couse, a link to the site. Horray for me!

New Site

I made mention recently about the frustration of being primarily a web developer. The bulk of the work I do goes into building CMS tools for my clients to manage their sites - the kind of thing that has a password on it and I can't exactly post a link to it. Screenshots are nice, but don't do the work justice. I've also worked on some top-secret market research projects recently - I can't even post screenshots of that work. But, every now and then, I get to actually do some design work. My good friend Chris Carter hired me to redesign his consulting firm's website. It took much longer ...

Version 3.02b

I've had this new design idea kicking around for several weeks. I've been trying to find the time here and there to work it out, but time is pretty scarce these days. So, last week, I decided to just throw it out there, and keep working on it as I get the chance. So, the whole site has a new look to it. In the next few days/weeks, I'll add some new features. In the meantime, pardon the dust. If you see anything glaringly wrong, let me know.

IFR: Inman Flash Replacement

You may or may not notice that all of the entry titles on the site have been updated. Instead of standard HTML, they're now rendered in Flash. Yep, every time I make a new post, I open up Flash, edit a title object, and save it as a SWF. Oh, and I do it three times - one for each style. No I don't. I stumbled across a technique this afternoon called Inman Flash Replacement. You may have seen it used over at ESPN.com. You'll probably see it at more sites in the future. What it boils down to is an ingenious way to replace text on a page with a stylized version, while leaving the semantic structure of the page ...
