I’m not really into the whole “reality” tv thing. But the last 2 weeks, Judy and I have been watching one of the summer shows on CBS, “Rock Star: INXS”. Unfortunately, it’s pretty damn addicting. The format is pretty typical, I think. Instead of “tasks”, the contestants sing songs. At the end, one of them is voted out. Just a few of my thoughts…
+ It’s probably the kindest of the reality shows. No “You’re fired!”, no real back-stabbing or plotting against each other… everyone is relatively nice to each other. At the end of the show, when someone is voted out, Tim Farris says, “I’m sorry, you’re just not right for our band (INXS)”. He sounds genuinely remorseful.
+ On that note, at no point in the show is it ever referred to as simply “the band” or “our band”, it’s always “our band, INXS”. Just in case anyone watching forgot who they were.
+ I think they started out with 15 people. After 2 weeks, it’s pretty clear that there are 4 or 5 who are head and shoulders above the rest. And the 3 that have been outed so far really had no business there in the first place. Of the remaining singers, there are 2 guys and 2 girls who are obviously talented. The rest are pretty interchangeable. For instance, 3 of the girls have the same husky voice and blonde hair.
+ There’s one guy who looked like he probably lost the “Rock Star: Green Day” contest, but he’s doing pretty well here.
+ Two girls have much better voices than the others - one has the better voice, but not much of a stage presence. The other looks more comfortable onstage. I think it’s a moot point, though - there’s no way they’re picking a female to be the lead singer of their band (INXS).
+ If you wanted to try a fun little drinking game, take a shot every time Brooke Burke says “rocker”. You’ll be toast halfway through.
+ What the hell is Dave Navarro doing on this show?

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention… not a word, not a breath, not even a passing mention is given to “the dead one”. I mean, that’s why they’re looking for a new lead singer, right? It’s the 300lb gorilla in the room - and nobody is talking about it.
Don’t the have to at least fill in the half of the audience who were under the age of 10 when he killed himself?

I missed the last two episodes of Who wants to be a Rock Star. Who won?

Unfortunately, “JD” won it. I won’t argue that he & Marty were the top 2 down the stretch, but that guy just rubbed me the wrong way.
