R.I.P. - 2003-2005

the ipod died a long, slow death

My trusty iPod has finally bit the dust. Purchased in early 2003, this first-generation iPod with a whopping 5GB of storage was used almost daily for the first 2 years of its existence. Over the last 8 months or so, the battery life had slipped down to about a 2-hour range. Over the last month, that plumetted to 20 minutes of life. And, in the last week, I’ve been unable to even mount it on my PC to transfer songs.

My iPod was first put to use in conjunction with my old Titanium Powerbook, just as Jobs intended. Then, when I moved to a PC, I took the iPod with me, and reformatted it as an Fat-32 drive. For a while, I used it with my Fedora/SUSE systems, but grew irritated that I couldn’t access the iTunes Music Store from those platforms and moved back to XP.

In the early days, the iPod was my trusty work companion - I would spend my full 8 hours at the office with those little white earbuds attached to my head. Since my office is now also my home, I can listen to whatever I want at whatever *volume* I want, so the iPod was relegated to primarily automotive use.

It will be sorely missed.

  1. You should get yourself one of those nifty looking iPod nanos…and while you’re at it, get one for me too.

  2. I’m sorry, honey. You can use mine whenever you want….well, as long as I’m not using it. ;)
