Do The Math

I played another round of Saturday Morning Golf this weekend at Currie Park in Wauwatosa.

I lost my sunglasses during the round. My eyes are terribly light-sensitive, and I wear the shades pretty much year-round.

The course at Currie Park is approximately 6,500 yards long. I’ll estimate an average of 30 yards wide, plus another 750 yards from each green to the next tee. That all adds up to 202,000 square yards. My glasses are about 7 inches across, maybe 2 inches top to bottom - 0.0389 square yards, to keep things in perspective. That means my glasses are equal to about .000000192% of the course.

It was a busy day, so I’ll estimate that there were an average of 5 foursomes sent out on the course every hour, and we finished around Noon. If the last group teed off at 5:00, there were another 100 golfers out there after we were on Saturday, and probably another 200 on Sunday.

I won’t even calculate the odds of someone having hit their shots in the same locations as mine.

Anyways, long story short… the chance that someone found my sunglasses before the county sent out the mowers was astronomically small.

But yet, here they are.

  3. It’s always dangerous for a reporter to challenge someone’s math, but the estimate of 750 yards between each green and tee is astronomical. It’s enough to have Scott Walker woozy with grief at the thought of all the watering and grass-cutting of essentially needless space.

To say it’s 750 yards between each green and tee is to say the land equivalent of two fair-sized par 4’s exist between each hole. Now, Currie is clearly no Whistling Straits, so your estimate would mean there’s probably a 170-yard par 3, followed by 750 yards of walking space to, say for example, a 410-yard par 4. That course would be the greatest walking workout of all time! There’s no way I’m carrying the bag on that trip!

However, your sunglasses were recovered against tremendous odds. Way to go.

  4. Sorry Jim. Not being nearly the wordsmith you are, what I meant to write was “a total of 750 yards”. Not actually 750 yards between each hole.

  5. Your effusive praise of my word-smithing reminds me. I’m going to Vegas next week. Do you still have the map?

  6. The map? I thought you had the map. I’ve never counted myself among the lucky few who have even laid eyes up the map.
