This is The World According to Buchs - Keepin’ it moving since 2003!

Vino, Vidi, Vici

Last night, Judy and I joined her sister and brother-in-law for an evening of one of my favourite things, drinking lots of wine. WCTC held a fundraiser at the Country Springs Inn out in Waukesha. Your entry fee got you a wine glass, which you were free to ask the servers to fill up at any time. There was also a fair amount of foodstuffs to be had - a pretty nice buffet, and a few restaurants were set up for you to sample their wares (Mr. B’s crab cakes were fantastico!, and the ribs & beans from “Q” were, too).

mteden_thumb.pngAs for the wine, after sampling for 2+ hours, you start to lose the ability to distinguish a good wine from a great wine — although it’s always easy to identify a bad wine. My favourite of the evening was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates (”Villa Mt. Eden Tall Trees Cab. Sauv.”). I gave that one a 4.5 on my personal 5-point scale. According to the rep from the vineard, it should be locally available at a Sendicks or New World Wine. I also enjoyed a Rodney Strong Sauvignon Blanc (”Charlotte’s Home“) - that was a 4.0. I’m not sure of the vintages of either of those.

Most of what I had I gave scores between 3 and 3.75. The worst wine I had was a “Dry Red” from Mason Creek Winery (”River Red”), which received a 0.25 — it was horrible.

  1. I am simply too uncultured (and underpaid) to develop a wine taste, but I have a similar 5.0 point scale for beer:

    Busch Light: 5.0+
    Sprecher Amber: 4.0
    Guinness: 4.5
    Miller Lite: 3.5
Tetley’s, The Pride of Yorkshire: 4.0
    Budweiser: 1.0
    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale: 1.5
Cherry Kastiel: 4.75 (powerful stuff; hard to get)
    Red Hook: 4.0

Basically, I consider anything under 0.25 to be undrinkable.

  2. Sierra Nevada gets a 1.5, yet Miller Lite gets a 3.5? And I’m not even going to tough the Busch Light rating.

  3. Did I mock the Villa Mt. Edens Tall Tree Flowering Buttercup Rose Petal Cabernet Sauvignon? No, I didn’t.

To each his own, my friend. To each his own. Sierra Nevada just tastes like ass to me.
