I was in need of some driving music last week, so I hopped back on to iTunes and grabbed the new disc by The Twilight Singers. It’s awsome.
This album is pretty close to the sound of the old Whigs stuff. One of the Afghan Whigs specialties were their live cover songs - and this disc continues that trend. All the songs on this disc are covers - some I know, some I don’t. They all sound very distinct, though. Even if you know the originals, you won’t recognize them at first.
The best tunes, in my opinion, are “Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair” and “Hyperballad” (Bjork). Very strong stuff.
The Twilight Singers are fronted by Greg Dulli, who used to lead the Afghan Whigs, one of my favourite bands of, like, ever. He’s a real baddasss. This is The Twilight Singers 3rd full-length disc; I missed the second (Blackberry Belle) but the first (Twilight As Played By The Twilight Singers) was a bit off. A little too stylized, I think - they were shooting to capture a mood or style, and didn’t quite hit it in the mark.
