When I woke up on Monday morning, I had no idea that this was Taco Week. I really didn’t. But, as luck would have it, I have (mostly) enjoyed more than my fair share of tacos this week.
Earlier this week, I had dinner with Rajan & Tora at Xel-Ha. It’s in the space that used to be Taqueria Azteca - before they got so damn good they couldn’t fit everyone in that little room and moved into Ye Olde Dinner Bell’s space.
Xel-Ha was good, not great. The service was a little slow. Actually, it was a lot slow. Everyone else ordered tacos, and I ordered the Chili Verde with Shrimp, which was pretty good. I hear the tacos were a little on the dry side. So, in closing, we had a good time, but that had more to do wih the company than the place. I’m in no hurry to go back.
Last night, I was relegated to parking a few blocks from my apartment. I pulled into a spot on Farwell, in front of the George Webb’s. There’s been a number of vacant storefronts in that little strip-mall for a while, but there’s a new tenant - Taco City. Well, I was hungry, and decided to give them a try. I ordered 2 steak tacos on corn tortillas - to go. When i got home and opened them up, they were pretty massive, and loaded. Full of onions, tomatoe, and a little lettuce. Alas, instead of actual steak it was filled with shredded beef. It wasn’t bad, but a little on the bland side. I think I’ll go back for lunch one of these days and see how their other offerings are. If nothing else, it’s good to have a taco place close by. I’d compare it to an El Chico Zuma-style place - you wouldn’t want to make it a dinner destination, but in a pinch…

Just to cap things off this week, I had a plate of Fish Tacos at Sol Fire last night. Yummy.

So, I was googling Taco City to find an address to complain to on PlanetFeedback. I was in there last week, and it was well…. disheartening. Without too many sordid details — I don’t like food made by people who have just been smoking and then they take my money, and then they prepare the food with their bare hands — no washing needed, it seems. Urgh.
The funniest thing about it being that I googled Taco City and found bbuchs’ blog.
