This is The World According to Buchs - Keepin’ it moving since 2003!

Take That, Linux!

radeon9000proWay back in April, I upgraded my monity to a widescreen flat-panel display. I noted in a post back then that one of my first orders of business was to get it running properly under my Fedora install. It was certainly usable, but I was losing out on the widescreen aspect ratio.

Well, 70 days later, I’m proud to announce that I figured it out. I’ve been a little busy as of late, so I haven’t had a ton of time to hack away at it. Sunday night, I decided to roll up my sleeves and get into it. 3 hours later, I had nothing. Over the last few days, I did a little bit of research, and last night I took another stab at it. After about 2 hours, I *finally* got it right.

It was a combination of things. First, my initial stab at updating the xorg.conf file was all wrong. Secondly, and this was the biggie, was that I needed to install a proper driver for my video card. The problem is, I’m now running Fedora Core 2, which uses the x.org server instead of the XFree86 server, whcih ATI’s driver was written for. After a little searching, and a lot of reading, I found links to a few patches, and instructions on getting it up and running in my environment. I had a few initial problems with the process, but I think I had initially installed an older RPM.

So, as of about 10:13 last night, I’m operating in full widescreen mode - 1280×768.

I’ve got a few things to address yet - OpenGL performance, for one, but that’s on the back-burner.

I’ll post the instructions/a link to the instructions I used later.

Next up, trying to access my NTFS drive from the Fedora desktop… (nevermind… got it).
