Take That, Linux!

Way back in April, I upgraded my monity to a widescreen flat-panel display. I noted in a post back then that one of my first orders of business was to get it running properly under my Fedora install. It was certainly usable, but I was losing out on the widescreen aspect ratio. Well, 70 days later, I'm proud to announce that I figured it out. I've been a little busy as of late, so I haven't had a ton of time to hack away at it. Sunday night, I decided to roll up my sleeves and get into it. 3 hours later, I had nothing. Over the last few days, I did ...

Weekend Wrapup

Summerfest started last week Thursday; Judy & I (w/ Maureen) went on Friday. The two of them had the afternoon off, so they got there closer to 3:00, and I joined them at around 5:30. It was a pretty typical summerfest - obnoxious drunk crowds, overpriced beer, yadda yadda yadda. There were a few highlights, though: The Great Table Migration We were standing in the Piggly Wiggly stage area, looking around for a spot claim as our own. Ben Folds was playing at 10:00, and although it was only 6:30 at the time, all the good seats were taken. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted 3 or 4 kids hauling a picnic table from about 100 ...

Golf Update

Andrew & I played 9 holes at Warnimont Park on Tuesday night. I also played 18 at Missing Links on Saturday - plus I hit a bucket before the round on Saturday, and another on Sunday morning. So I'd estimate that I've hit close to 300 balls in the last 5 days. Saturday was miserable. I never got comfortable on the range, and it showed on the course. I hit a couple of good shots, but for the most part, it was a long day. I felt so bad about it that I woke up early on Sunday (after the night at Borrego's) and went back to the driving range. That session went much better - I was hitting everything ...

Ciabatta?

This is the kind of entry I usually reserve for the "What's For Lunch" section of my site. However, I thought that there just wasn't enough space reserved over there to pull this off - a blow-by-blow account of my first encounter with a Cousin's Ciabatta sandwich. * 2:22 - I made a left turn onto Farwell, saw the Cousin's on my right, and swung into a parking space * 2:23 - I ask the Cousin's employee with his hat turned 30-degrees to the right for a Tuscan Market Club sandwich. * 2:26 - This is no Jimmy John's. It's been 3 minutes, and I still don't have my sandwich * 2:28 - We ...

Borrego’s

Dan & I had dinner on Saturday night at Borrego's (The Chuck recently wrote about his trip there in May). I was pretty impressed. The location - on Water Street in the Third Ward - was most recently occupied by Onyx. It's a pretty narrow space, but runs the whole length of the building, from the street back to the river. I only took a peek inside the main dining area upstairs, since we had plans to dine below on the riverfront patio (they call it the "SpeakEasy"). It's on the smallish side - 4 or 5 tables, all in close quarters. Service was a ...

Fantasy Football

I received an e-mail yesterday from ESPN regarding the renewal of our Fantasy Football League service (related posts). Let me sum up our collective experience with ESPN last season: "crap". The previous season, based on the recommendations of Dan, we went with RT Sports. All in all, that went pretty well. Occassionally, their real-time scoring was a little slow, but other than that, they were very reliable. Before the start of the 2002/2003 season, I got an e-mail from ESPN announcing their new service. I thought about it for a while, and assumed that the application would be as tight as the rest of their site. And, I thought that ...

iTunes?

There was a new version of iTunes released yesterday. I was reading up over at SlashDot, and found a posting there about it. I raced over to the download page, grabbed the installer, and did my thing. I made my way back over to /. to report on my findings. I don't typically post, but someone specifically asked what was new in this version. After running the app, I immediately noticed a few things: # The title bar was completely mac-like. Window controls are in the upper-left side, and the window title itself is centered. # Right-Clicking the titlebar brought up an Options menu that I've never seen before. It's called "Plugin Options", and has preferences like "skin the ...

That’s What I’m Talking About!

Back in March, I decided to treat myself to a new jacket. I'd been wearing the same wool-blend black zip-up jacket for about 3 years. It has seen better days. I found one that I liked on Amazon, so I went ahead and placed the order. It was actually purchased through Nordstrom. Last week at Jazz In The Park, Judy & I were walking home, and I went to zip up the new jacket. I've worn it maybe a half dozen times, give or take. When I went to zip, the little metal strip on the left-side (the thing you actually place into the zipping aparatus to start the zipping process) ...

Golf

I played a round on Friday afternoon at Willow Run golf course, out in Waukesha. Lots of trees, lots of water in play. It was a fairly tough course. I haven't played much this year, other than a few after-work rounds at Warnimont with Andy. It really showed. I played much better on the back 9 - improving my score by 10 strokes - but still didn't play all that well. I'm hitting the ball much better, and I think I've worked out one problem with my swing (and found 3 or 4 new ones). I'm anxious to get out there again. I've been doing some bargain unting on eBay, and found a new driver on the cheap. I ...
