MovableType, the software that powers my weblog, announced new licensing terms for the new release (3.0 - I’m running 2.6.5). Bottom line, it’s no longer free. Which sucks. I never bothered to upgrade to 2.6.5, so for the time being, I have less than no intention of upgrading to 3.0.
I’m not sure why they did that. From the responses I’ve been reading around the web, they (Six Apart, the developers) instantly went from one of the most popular web log tools to public enemy #1. There’s a pretty substantial community of developers who create plugins for MovableType. I’m curious to see how they feel about this - do they bolt for another platform, or stick it out?
There’s a post on the MT site from one of the founders that tries to explain the position they’ve taken, and what the next steps are. She claims that “Yes, there will be a free version of Movable Type 3.0.” There are also mentions of a “Developer Edition” of the new version available, but damned if I can find it.
So, for now, I’ll be sitting tight and seeing how this all plays out. In the meantime, though, I guess I could poke around the web and see what else is available…

As a developer of numerous plugins I’m pleased as punch and have a lot of plugins planned for the new release — free and for pay.
