Pet Sounds

Some lively conversation over (many) drinks at the Trocadero last night with a few of the fellas - politics, giant spiders, el Chupacabra, and real estate were some of the keynote topics. Things got a little heated at one point, but I think everyone is going to be OK.

Later on, we popped upstairs to the Red Light. Conversation turned to music, specifically, Andy’s bizarre preoccupation with Bob Dylan. Apparently, he’s listened exclusively to Dylan for the last few months — nothing else. I’m not a fan, but I respect other people’s tastes.

Then he bad-mouthed the Beach Boys.

I think he was quoting a Rolling Stone article that ranked the top 500 albums, and the fact that Dylan had 2 of the top 10 (according to the editors). I hadn’t seen the article or the list, so I asked what the rest of the top 10 were. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was #1, and Pet Sounds was #2. Andy’s followup comments immediately caused me to lose all respect for him. I can’t quote him verbatim, but I believe it had something to do with the sound of the music of the Beach Boys, that album in particular, causing him to vomit. This from a guy who thinks “Radiohead” stinks. Obviously, the man is deluded.
