It wasn’t a christmas gift, it wasn’t a new-year’s resolution, but Judy & I signed up for a Bally’s membership in January of this year. Technically, Judy signed up, and I go for free. Nice deal, hey? My only request — and it was a deal-breaker — was that there had to be a pool.
The first time I went was early on a Saturday morning. I swam for about 40 minutes, and it was my first real exercise in quite a while. When I got into my car when I was done, I quickly realized that I was in no condition to be driving around. Luckily, Judy lives within 3 blocks of the place, so I made it over there and, literally, passed out. At one point, neither of us could find my pulse. It wasn’t a pretty picture.
Since then, I’ve gone just about every other day on my lunch hours (with the exception of a 2 week hiatus while I was doing some freelance work). It’s a nice deal - it’s only a half-mile from work, so I’m in the pool within 10 minutes of leaving the office. I usually swim for 25, hit the hot-tub for 10, shower, grab a bite at Pick & Save, and head back. Since I typically take lunch at around 2:00, the place is pretty much empty.
Anyways, up until this week, I’ve just been working to build up a little stamina. Well, I seem to be getting up to speed, so now I’ve been picking up the pace, so to speak. This last Tuesday, instead of doing leisurely 100’s (4 lengths of the pool), I tried doing harder 50’s. I think I did 8 good 50’s, mostly freestyle, and a little breaststroke.
Today, I’m paying for it. I’m pretty stiff. I think I’m not spending enough time in the hot tub. Yeah, that’s it…
