The Ladykillers

Judy & I went to see “The Ladykillers”last night at the Oriental Theatre. I love the Coen Brothers’ work - “Miller’s Crossing”is firmly planted in my Top 25 movies of all time. I never quite got around to seeing “Intolerable Cruelty”, but I’ve thouroughly enjoyed everything else I’ve seen. In fact, here’s a short, ranked list of my favourite Coen Brothers’ movies:

  1. “Miller’s Crossing”
  2. “Fargo”
  3. “The Big Lebowski”
  4. “The Man Who Wasn’t There”
  5. “Barton Fink”
  6. “Blood Simple”
  7. “Raising Arizona”
  8. “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
  9. “The Hudsucker Proxy”

Having just seen The Ladykillers, I’m not sure where it stacks up - I think I need more time to let it sink in. My gut tells me it’s somewhere around the 7/8/9 mark. It was good, but it wasn’t great. It just didn’t have the feeling of a great movie. On a pure “heist” movie level, it left a little to be desired. In terms of the Coen’s style of moviemaking, the dialog just wasn’t up to par. Visually, it was great. Tom Hanks was fantastic. Marlon Wayons was good, but he and the rest of the cast were just along for the ride. The “General” (Tzi Ma) stole every scene in which he said a line (maybe a total of 20 words the whole movie). All in all, a fun movie, but not all that rememberable (is that even a word?).
