My good friend The Chuck and I went to an afternoon screening of “Dawn Of The Dead”:imdb. Wow. Who doesn’t enjoy a little flesh-eating zombie action?
These weren’t your old-school zombies — no lumbering, mumbling brain-eating zombies. No, no, no - these were super-fast zombies. They run. Fast. Probably the greatest advance in the zombie genre has been the introduction of the super-fast zombie. It just adds a whole new wrinkle to the “the-dead-are-walking-the-earth-and-want-to-eat-my-brains” connundrum.
I’m as big a fan of the zombie genre movie as anyone. The original “Night of the Living Dead”:imdb is easily in my top 25 films of all time. Maybe even the top 10. The new breed of zombie movies don’t quite make the cut, but they’re a heck of a good time to watch. There were several scenes in the movie that I found myself… not quite laughing, more like guffawing at what was going on. Just a heck of a lot of fun.
To top it all off, the movie takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The characters in the film hole up in a mall in “suburban Milwaukee”. I don’t remember the actual name of the mall in the film, but if I had to take a stab at it, it was probably Mayfair.
My only gripe with the film had to do with a bit of geography that didn’t exist. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, so I’ll leave it at that.
Did I mention that the zombies were super-fast? Also, there were a whole lot of them. And they were fast.
