Plugins

One of the great features of MovableType - the application that runs this, and thousands of other weblogs - is it’s extensibility. 10 minutes ago, I installed a few “plug-ins” to handle text formatting on the site - Textile and SmartyPants.

Textile (v2.02), in particular, kicks some serious ass. For instance, appending a colon and an instructional modifier to a phrase in quotes automatically generates a link to the IMDB, Amazon, or Google:

  • This weekend I’m going to go see “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”:imdb
  • Right now I’m listening to “Beginning Stages Of The Polyphonic Spree”:amazon

SmartyPants(v1.5.1) translates and converts punctuation to typographer’s style - straight quotes become curly quotes, double dashes become em-dashes, and three periods becomes an elipsis.

There’s a site dedicated to these plugins at http://mt-plugins.org. I see another half-dozen that I’ll probably install tonight.
