Baseball Is Broken, Pt. II

During my morning reading here at home, I saw a link to an article at espn.com: Umps currently cool on replay, boycott conference call with MLB Here's the gist of it: the umpires don't want to be replaced by machines. So they decided that they won't talk to the league office about implementing instant replay. Does David Stern stand for this? No. Roger Goodell? Not in a heartbeat. There are a million things wrong with baseball - see my previous comments on that - but "gutless leadership" just jumped into the top 5. Why Uncle Bryan didn’t go to the Brewers game with his neices and nephew last night

Uncle Bryan isn't here because he believes that the current economic climate of the league unfairly favors teams in large markets. Small-market teams are perennial also-rans, and have been relegated to acting as de-facto farm systems. The implementation of a salary cap system would bring parity to major league baseball, as it has done for the other major professional sporting leagues. However, the combination of an extremely powerful player's union (vociferously opposed to any steps that could potentially limit players salaries) and an equally powerful group of owners of large-market teams (who have thusfar enjoyed the spoils of the current system) have successfully blocked any attempts to bring about such change.

Baseball is dead to me

As I mentioned yesterday, spring is in the air. You know what else that means? Baseball - for some of us, but not me. Baseball is dead to me. Once upon a time, I loved the baseball. I was growing up in the 70s/80s, and all the kids in the neighborhood followed the Brewers. It didn't hurt that they were actually good at the time. I remember flagging down squad cars to ask the police for their limited-edition baseball cards. I once had a collection of 1000's of baseball cards (which I think I sold off for $15 at a garage sale; I'm sure the profits were spent on candy within a week).
