Nice Guys Finish Last

Not!

In taking the bus to and from work every day, I’m just trying to do my small part for the environment. Also, it’s cheaper than parking downtown. Also, my car has been dead for a few weeks.

I’ve been doing this for several months now, which is enough to recognize and be recognized by others - drivers, riders, crazy people. So I’ve made it a point to say “Good Morning” to the driver as I get on each day. It’s usually the same guy. I don’t know if he’s in his own little world with his own thing going on, but I say it anyways.

The other day, I left work right at 5:00 and high-tailed it over to the bus stop, which is a little more than a half block away. Just as I walked out the door of my building, I saw the bus pull up and everyone load on. I crossed the street and started walking towards the stop, resigned to the fact that I’d be waiting 15 minutes for the next one. Except the bus didn’t move… so I picked up my pace for a moment. Then I decided I would look really stupid if I was running to catch the bus and missed it, so I eased back down to my typical brisk walk. And the bus didn’t move… So I picked it up again, and made it to the stop. [That whole scenario took between 30 and 45 seconds.]

The door to the bus opened for me, and it was my regular morning driver. I thanked him for waiting, and he gave me a nod.

So the moral of the story is: “don’t be a dick”.

It pays off eventually.
