Last summer, Judy and I got hooked on what remains my only foray into “reality tv” - Rockstar: INXS. Those guys found themselves a new lead singer to replace the dead one, and now they’re touring the world - coming to a county fair near you!
This summer, the show is back with a new “band”. Supernova - at this point, I’d call it more of a concept than a band. Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses) and Jason Newsted (Metallica) decided to get together and start a band. They haven’t actually recorded anything yet, but they seem to enjoy hanging out on TV together.
Anyways, last night was week 4 (I think). Of the original 15 contestants, 8 were men (and 7 women for the mathematically challenged). The first two out were both guys, and both deserved to go home. Right off the bat though, I got the feeling that Tommy Lee was clearly more interested in the idea of having a hot chick on the road with the band than one of the guys. It’s a little bit creepy at times.
Last night, that theory was pretty much validated.
For the 9th consecutive week, Zayra was one of the “bottom three” and at risk of being sent home. And yet again, she managed to squeak by. She’s clearly got the least talent of the bunch - the best the judges can come up with is that she’s “certainly original”. When asked if she owned any of the guys old albums, her reply was that she had “heard OF them”. But week after week, she throws on some skimpy little outfit, and somebody else does just enough to warrant keeping her around.
Except this week. Now, they’re just making shit up. I’m not saying that the guy who got kicked off last night (Phil) was great. I really didn’t care for him. But this girl stinks. Last week, when forced to sing for her life she chose to do the EXACT SAME SONG she did the night before that put her in that position. And it was AWFUL. Last night, the judges decided that the guy just didn’t have the “commitment” to be in their band.
If they had said “tits”, I would have at least respected that.
The only saving grace of this season is that these guys aren’t quite as nicey-nice as INXS was. Those guys were afraid to hurt someone’s feelings. These guys, not so much. Hasn’t quite reached that-dick-on-american-idol status - they’re not just cutting people down for the hell of it, they’re just being honest. Brutally honest.

I might tune in for the rest of Rock Star: Supernova. Sounds good.
By the way, I thought Rockstar: The Doors or Rockstar: Nirvana was supposed to be next?
