Over drinks with Dan last night, we had a short discussion about DSL vs. RoadRunner. I’ve been pretty happy with DSL, and have had that service for almost 4 years now. RoadRunner recently upgraded their network, and are offering some pretty blistering speeds; I’ve been on the “Pro” plan with SBC for about 2 years, which offers pretty good speeds.
Or so I thought.
Since it was on my mind, I called tech support today to have them check out a small problem I’ve been having. My connection has been randomly dropping out over the last few months, and more recently it’s been happening a lot. They’re going to check it out and get back to me.
In order to find the customer service number, I pulled up my billing statement online. And there, halfway down the page, was this little line item:
04-27 SBC YAHOO! DSL EXPRESS
I thought that was odd, because I’m supposed to be on the higher speed plan. That’s when the wheels were set in motion. I hopped online and did a Bandwidth Speed Test, and found that I was actually getting about 1.3Mbps on a download. Which isn’t bad, but far from the advertised top speed of 3.0Mbps.
After talking with Dan last night, I knew that RoadRunner had a faster connection, but I thought that for the price I was paying, the 3.0 speed was a good deal. Not so good a deal for 1.5, though.
I called SBC customer service again and asked them to check it out. Turns out that at my last address - 1/2 mile down the road on Prospect Avenue - I was within range of the central line and able to get the full “Pro” 3.0Mbps connection. Since we moved last August, we’re slightly out of range, and they automatically slid us down to the “Express” package. I did the quick math, and I’m paying about $19.95 per 1Mbps.
Next I hopped over to the Time Warner site, and saw that they’re running a promotion on their standard 5.0Mbps package - $34.95/month. That works out to $6.99 per 1Mbps
Time Warner will have someone here with the new equipment on Wednesday. Bye-bye, DSL!

OK, I just ran another test on the line. Yesterday I was topping out around 1.3Mbps. Today, I’m hitting 0.66 - which equates to about $45 per 1/Mbps.

They can drop the “Ameritech” from their name ALL THEY WANT and still deliver that same shit service.

That’s the thing, though. Up until now, I’ve been very pleased with the service. It’s just the last month or so.
SBC’s other entities are a whole other issue. (I’m talking to you, Cingular!)
