Extortion!

Roughly 3 weeks ago, I sent in payment for the renewal of my license plate tags. Last week, I received a notice that - although they gladly cashed my check - they would not process the renewal until a parking ticket was paid off.

The notice listed the date of the citation as December 12, 2001. That’s more than 3 years ago. I thought it a bit odd that they would have let me renew for the last 3 years, but decided that now was the time to collect their $40.

I tried to pay the ticket both online and over the automated phone system. Unsuccessfully. There were 2 problems. First, the State listed an incomplete citation number - they forgot a digit. Oops.

Secondly - and this is the kicker - it’s not for my car. At least not my current car. And, there’s not one ticket due, there are ten of them! I bought my Saturn in January of 2001. So, it’s more than likely that the citation they’re holding out on me for is mine. I’m happy to pay it - just take care of my current tags, dammit. But the other 9 are a different story. They run as recently as March of 2002 - a full year+ after I no longer had that car.

So, looks like I’ll waste some time in the next week trying to get this straightened out. Who do I invoice for that?

Fuckers.
