Once upon a time, back in the fall of 1985, I started the first semester of my freshman year of high school at Bay View. On the whole, our sports program wasn’t anything to get too excited about. We had an exceptional track & field program while I was there (I used to share a seat on the bus with a future Olympian), and we had some great individual wrestlers. I also like to think we had a pretty good swim team. Football - we positively stunk. But Basketball… we had some great teams. Although we never quite made the Leap to “State” while I was there, Bay View did make 4 trips there since 1990.
Last June, there was a shake-up in progress within several MPS schools. Among others, Bay View made the decision to end the coaching career of Phil Jones, who had led the team for 28 years. MPS cited “budgetary” reasons. Jones and the other dismissed coaches were given a chance to interview for their jobs, but MPS had already stated that they would be rehired at their old salaries.
Well, the Redcats are in the middle of a controversy this season. They had been playing well under their new coach, even knocking off the #1 team in the state, Milwaukee Vincent a few weeks ago. But a “lackluster” performance in their next game sent the new coach into a tirade at halftime, where he “referred to the players using a racial slur”. He was subsequently suspended from coaching for 5 days.
Since the coach’s return to the bench, the team has lost their last 3 games. And, in the final minutes of the game on Tuesday night, one of their leading scorers left the floor, changed into street clothes, and turned in his uniform. (He did stick around to shake the hands of their opponents after the game).
This is one of the very few times that I’m going to side with the players against a coach. This guy should be dumped *now*.

When I read that story this morning I couldn’t believe it. How can someone in charge possibly keep that coach after saying what was said?
As a frequent visitor to the McDonald’s in Bay View - it’s right by the high school - I often find myself in the company of the school’s athletes. Hmm … that’d make an interesting blog entry.

Right - it’s not like it was one kid’s word against the coach. It was an assistant coach who turned him in. Inexcusable that this guy still has a job.
While the article doesn’t say exactly what he said, I think they made it pretty clear. I’m surprised the kids didn’t jump him in the locker room.
