First!

Movable Type 3.1 was just released. I received the notification e-mail at 3:09PM today, and I'm posting this at 3:12. I'll let you know how everything went later. Well, for one, there's a few things that need to be done to enable Dynamic Publishing. A directory to be created, and an .htaccess file to be modified. Well, if you've tried to follow any links, you'll see: The requested page could not be found. Smarty error: [in mt:13 line 323]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'MTRelatedEntriesByKeyword' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 556) Apparently, some/most of the plugins I've been using aren't compatible. Or I didn't read the install docs correctly.

Fire It Up!

Friday night, Judy & I did a little shopping over at Sears. We've known for months that we needed/wanted a new grill for the balcony of the condo. We finally settled on the Weber Genesis Silver B. It's a 3-burner LP grill. I would have liked to upgrade to the stainless steel model, but this one is great. The spot on the balcony we want to place it in is about 54" wide. The width of the grill is a bit more than that. Luckily, it looks like we'll be able to leave the left-hand tray off the frame, and it will fit like a charm. The bad news is that we bought it un ...

Pick & Save: Metro Market

I just got back from a lunchtime trip over to the grand opening of the Pick & Save Metro Market. First, let me say this: they have Karotka. I was sort of expecting the store to retain the layout from the old Kohl's. It didn't - it's completely different. The main entrance to the store opens into the produce department, and it's a little cramped. I expect to see bottlenecks there when it gets busy. Past the produce is the deli and bakery. Nothing to get too excited about. Around the corner is the meat department. In a word - awsome. It's easily the finest meat and seafood department I've ever seen in a grocery store. Puts V. Richards/Sendicks to shame. It's that good. The ...

Spongemonkeys

I was just reading an article at Slate about the new Skippy's peanut butter ads, featuring rastafarian elephants. I read it only because (1) I hate peanut butter, and (2) I hate that commercial. Apparently, so does the author (on #2). Halfway through the article, though, the author mentioned the Quiznos ad from last year - the singing rodents. You know: "We love the subs! 'Cuz they are good to us. The Quiznos subs..." ...

Women We Love

As those who know me, uh... know, I'm a subscriber and big fan of Esquire magazine. Historically, I have taken the night or two following the arrival of the latest issue in my mailbox as "magazine night[s]", whereupon I sit myself in bed and read for a few hours. Late last week, I received the September issue. In it, among other things, was a small ad directing me to go to the website and participate in the "The Women You Love Survey". Here's the lead-in from the site: Who's the sexiest Bush daughter? The hottest Survivor? The foxiest first lady (in her prime)? ...

The End Is Near

The Big Move is nearly complete. We hired movers to take care of our furniture yesterday. Last weekend, we took a trip to Ikea to get some furnishings (and tea lights!), then spent the rest of the weekend moving various boxes and things. Although there's still a fair shake of work to be done, the end is in sight. Hopefully, we'll be painting this weekend. In the next few days, I'm hoping to unpack the mountains of boxes we have laying around, and also to grab a few more loads from my apartment. Most importantly, the cable guy is coming on Sunday afternoon to install service for us. Unfortunately, I was informed yesterday that, although our phone service would be set ...

Version 3.02b

I've had this new design idea kicking around for several weeks. I've been trying to find the time here and there to work it out, but time is pretty scarce these days. So, last week, I decided to just throw it out there, and keep working on it as I get the chance. So, the whole site has a new look to it. In the next few days/weeks, I'll add some new features. In the meantime, pardon the dust. If you see anything glaringly wrong, let me know.

Ikea Trip

Judy & I are taking a trip down to Ikea tomorrow. Early. We need some things for the new place - shelves, stools, other assorted stuffs. Each time we've gone in the past, we've followed Mapquest's directions. They suck. We end up taking a 20 minute drive through some semi-residential area, and when we get through to street the store is on, there's 2 freaking highways running right through. There's got to be a better way, right? I opened up MapPoint on my work computer, and found what I think are 2 alternate routes. 1) Stick on I-294, go all the way down to O'Hare, and then backtrack (slightly) up I-90. Seems to ...

Closing Time

"one last call for alcohol, so finish your whiskey or beer" Truly, one of the most under-rated pop-rock albums of the last 10 years. They got a really bad rap for writing a catchy tune with an annoying refrain. The rest of the disc is top-notch. And having the luxury of looking back, "Closing Time", was a great tune. "Feeling Strangely Fine" - Semisonic Also, we're closing the loan on our condo this afternoon. On Monday afternoon, we took what was supposed to be the final walkthrough inspection of the place. We were a little surprised at the amount of work left to be done. The kid working for the builder assured us it would get done. We brought a friend along, ...
