New Camera

"All I want for christmas is [a kick-ass digital camera].." I was able to stockpile a cache of Best Buy gift cards and cash them in for a digital camera. I'm very excited about it. It's a Fujifilm s5000. Very nice... On the downside, I got screwed by Best Buy. They've made my list. Again. I researched cameras for a few days before going out to the store, and knew what I wanted to get - I just wanted to kick it around before buying it. I did let the salesperson talk me into the "extended warranty" plan, but I have a plan of my own for that... Anyways, I got home with my new purchase, and jumped online to check something out. I saw that Best Buy had the exact same camera available online for $50 cheaper, with free shipping. Bastards! I called the store to find out how to get a price adjustment, and I was told that I couldn't, because they won't match online pricing. I explained that it wasn't a matter of matching a price, it was something they were advertising at that price. He wouldn't budge, I called him a jackass and hung up. Unfortunately, I had already opened the thing, so they'd stick me with a 15% re-stocking fee (Bastards!), which is more than what I would save by buying it online.

2004: The Year of …

Right around New Year's each year, I try to pick out what I think will be the business buzz-phrase of the coming year. 2002 - "The 80/20 rule". 80-percent of something comes from 20% of a subset of that thing. You can apply it to anything. 2003 - "At the end of the day". Not as catchy as the 80/20 rule, but also could be universally applied. And now, for 2004, I have identified "The Game" as the buzz-phrase of the coming year. Some examples: "You know the score of the game" - referring to the current state of a project. "At this point in the game" "He's not a big player in the game" - referring to someone involved with a project. There you have ...

Fedora

I've wiped out my previous Mandrake partition on my home computer, and replaced it with a larger partition, then installed the Fedora Core distro on it. So far, I'm really liking it. I've been goofing around with it for the last few days. It did take me a while to get my DSL connection up and running, and I'm still having issues trying to mount my NTFS drive partitions, but all-in-all, I'm digging it.

King of The World!

I won my Fantasy League over the weekend. Big day from Fred Taylor, and another big game from Shaun Alexander. See for yourself.

LOTR: ROTK 2

OK, I saw it last night. I haven't read the books in about 20 years. (There aren't many things I can say that I haven't done in 20 years, but this is one of them.) So I'm a little shaky on what exactly was and wasn't in the book/movie. It was a fantastic film, though. The battle scenes are fantastic, and the Frodo-Sam-Golum stuff is great. I've seen some reviews proclaiming it "best picture" already. I need to let it sink in a little bit... On a side note, one of the people I went to see it with was one of my High School english teachers. She's kept in touch with a friend of mine, and I haven't seen her ...

Oh yeah, by the way…

New site! I've had use of the (sub)domain for quite a while, but never really got around to doing anything substantial with it, other than using it to tool around with PHP & MySQL. I sort of *need* to get a portfolio site up soon, and decided to add a few other things to it as well. The design is still undergoing revisions, and I'm still getting the hang of Movable Type. I'll work on it as I can...

KDE

There's a new version of KDE (2.3) out in beta. I was trying to get it up and running on Mandrake 9.2, but I wasn't having much success. I'm considering scrapping the Drake and trying out some different distros. I was checking out DistroWatch and LinuxISO this afternoon, and found plenty of resources. I'm thinking of trying Xandros or Suse. But I think that's going to have to wait until after the holidays...

LOTR: ROTK

In about 15 minutes, I'll be on my way to South Shore Cinemas in Oak Creek to see Return Of The King. My friend Mark picked up a block of tickets (on the cheap) last week, and we're all meeting there early so's we can get good seats. And good seats are important, because it's three and a half hours long! I'm sure it will be most excellent, but I'll post a quickie review tomorrow. The Chuck saw it this morning: >> Do they destroy the ring? > -----Original Message----- > From: chuck rozewicz > Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2003 3:09 PM > To: Bryan > Subject: RE: Well? > > No. Frodo sucumbs to the power of the ring and becomes Darth Vader

Imaginary Superbowl II

Barring a tremendous game by the Dolphins Defense tonight, I'll be making my second straight trip to the Imaginary Superbowl next week. Last year, I was blown out in the final game by The Chuck. I'll likely be playing against The Cornucopias this year, unless McNabb goes off tonight. It was an odd situation for me on Sunday, because 7 of my 9 players were involved in the noon game, and my opponent - Hermann's Head - still had most of his team playing in the 3:00 game. I knew that I'd have to sit all afternoon, watching him pick away at my lead. Pick... Pick... Pick. Luckily (for me, not for him), I put up enough points early that I ...
